History

The Red Vic Movie House opened on July 25, 1980, at Haight and Belvedere streets in San Francisco, California. The first movie it played was the Canadian independent movie called Outrageous!. The theater was founded by a group of six employees and it had seating for 80, including couches from the Red Victorian Bed & Breakfast.

The theater moved to its final location at 1727 Haight Street in 1991 after renovating the former Full Moon Saloon space. The new Red Vic offered a larger auditorium equipped with video, 16mm, and 35mm Dolby Stereo sound projection.

During its run, the Red Vic Movie House won many local awards, including:

Best Indie Movie Theater (2007) - SF Weekly
Best Movie Theater for Parents (2005) - SF Weekly

On July 7, 2011, the San Francisco Chronicle published an article announcing that the theater would close on July 25, 2011. Jack Rix, the sole remaining member of the original founding group, sent us photos for the Photo Gallery page as a parting memory of the theater.

On their final day, they will be showing Harold and Maude.
