Stateside Theatre @ the Paramount
719 Congress Avenue Austin, TX 78701 Message: 512-472-5470 more » Opened Dec 25, 1935 as the State Theatre, the first movie theater in Austin. It received a major facelift in 1981, restoring much of its Art Deco design, but it went vacant in 1986. The City of Austin purchased the theater and leased it to a live theater company. A major rehab project began in 1998, and the theater company eventually purchased the theater outright. In 2000, the theater company merged with The Paramount Theatre for the Performing Arts to form the Austin Theatre Alliance. The fates of the State and the next-door Paramount Theatre were now joined. A city water main break damaged the State in Jun 2006, and the theater had to cancel its season to make repairs. It reopened Mar 1, 2011.
