Century Theatres' Cedar Hills Crossing Achieves THX Certification on all 16 Screens

SAN RAFAEL, Calif. and BEAVERTON, Ore., November 17, 2004 - THX Ltd., the leading provider of technologies, certification programs and quality assurance standards for the entertainment industry, today announced that the new Century 16 at Cedar Hills Crossing in Beaverton, Oregon, will be an all-THX Certified Cinema. The 16-screen theater, Century's first on Portland's west side, was designed and tested to meet the THX performance standards for sound and picture excellence. Century 16 at Eastport Mall is also an all-THX Certified Cinema. The THX Certification ensures movie audiences are provided with the best possible motion picture presentation. The Century 16 at Cedar Hills Crossing opens to the public this Friday.

"As the art and science of filmmaking continues to advance with new technologies, it becomes increasingly important to design theater environments that accurately present sound and visual content to cinema audiences," said Michael Franzi, vice president of sales for THX. "Century Theatres' decision to build an all-THX Certified Cinema at Cedar Hills Crossing reinforces both Century's and THX’s commitment to providing movie-going audiences the highest quality entertainment experience."

During the construction of the Century 16 Cedar Hills Crossing, THX engineers worked with Century to incorporate design elements and presentation equipment needed to ensure each cinema auditorium met the criteria for THX Certification. Once construction was complete, THX engineers returned to Beaverton to test for acoustic and visual performance. These tests are designed to make sure sound effects, music and dialogue are evenly distributed throughout the cinema, and background noise from other cinema auditoria and lobby concessions does not distract from the feature presentation. THX engineers also evaluated each auditorium for audience viewing angles, and projection and onscreen lighting levels, ensuring the best possible images are always displayed and superior visual quality is guaranteed.
