An American doctor travels to France to collect the remains of his adult son (Estevez) who perished in the Pyrenees while walking The Camino de Santiago, a thousand-year-old pilgrimage also known as The Way of St. James. Driven by grief and a profound desire to understand his son better, Tom decides to walk the historic 500-mile journey himself, armed only with his son's backpack, guidebook and ashes.
While walking The Camino, which ends at Santiago de Compostela in northwest Spain, Tom meets fellow pilgrims all looking for greater meaning in their lives: a Dutchman (Yorick van Wageningen), a Canadian (Deborah Kara Unger) and an Irish writer (James Nesbitt).
Along the way Tom re-examines his spirituality and discovers the difference between "the life we live and the life we choose."
