I like the Western genre, so it's not hard for me to enjoy a Western movie when one comes along. An added bonus here is to watch the Sutherland father-and-son combo in a movie together.

The setup is familiar: greedy man tries to grab as much land as possible before the railroad comes through, and will resort to intimidation and violence (including murder) if his money is refused.

Enter the good guy with a past. That past could help in this situation, but he's rather leave his past behind him, and if he wants to reconcile with his preacher father, that's the way he needs it to be.

Kiefer Sutherland does a surprisingly good job in his role, and his interactions with his on-screen and real-life father are very believable. Demi Moore seems out of place, but she does OK. Brian Cox chews up the screen, and his hired gentleman gunslinger is actually pretty likeable, so the inevitable confrontation is well-done.

If you like Westerns, I think you'll like this one. This is more like the traditional Western, where there isn't much gray between good and bad, rather than the conflicted and angst-ridden characters in more contemporary movies in the genre.
