A powerful movie from director/writer Barry Jenkins, which is more of a inner-city answer to "Boyhood." The movie tells of a young man's whose life was told in three chapters; the first chapter deals with him as a child, the second deals with him in his teen years and the third deals with him as a young adult. During his lifetime, he deals with bullies, a crack addicted mother and dealing with his sexual identity. Although the movie takes place in a urban neighborhood, I heard only one or two rap songs in the movie. We follow the young man with great interest and in the end we appreciated in what he did but how he survive a tough neighborhood. The movie got nominated for several Critic Choice and Golden Globe awards. It could get some Oscar nomination. If it does that hashtag #OscarSoWhite will disappear from Twitter, probably for good.

One of, if not the best-made films of 2016. Moonlight deserves every Oscar nomination that it picked up. I think Mahershala Ali has Best Supporting Actor locked down. I also think Barry Jenkin's script will win a Screenplay Oscar. The film follows Chiron, an African American man, throughout three stages of his life: as a child, a teenager, and an adult. This is a perfectly made, written, and acted film with incredible social commentary woven in.
