[--- Wait for Rental ---]by Angela Jan 25, 2000

All I can say is, BIG disappointment. I didn't think that this movie was as good as the previews. I was really disapointed! It is not that funny and when it is you do laugh out loud. If you do want to see it I suggest that you rent it, but I would nver see it again!

First of all....I didn't like it. This film was just plain old dumb. The best way to describe this movie is to say that it would make "Dumb and Dumber" an academy qualifier. If you have ever watched those late night movies on USA, then you will know the quality of this film. The premise for the film was kind of unique...two guys totally stuck in the 70s and the nite club scene...searching for the opportunity to fulfill their dreams. However their dream remains just out of their reach because they are the Abbot & Costello of the 90s. Now not all of the film was horrendous, but it was by far a fair to poor Saturday Night Live sketch. The film was short in length, repetitive in humor, and lacked clear direction. The story of two grown men working in their dad's flower shop, being the best of friends, and trying to live the night to it's fullest had its moments, but those were few and far between. Bottom line...imagine yourself finding your old leisure suit, getting it cleaned, and wearing it around town in order to live the nite life again....you can't imagine yourself doing that, so don't imagine yourself sitting in a theater watching this film.

All right, I will admit, I did not pay to see “A Night At The Roxbury”. I certainly hope the public won’t. I have been to school assemblies more exciting than this .5 layer movie. “A Night at the Roxbury” is, easily, the worst Saturday Night Live sketch to hit the big screen since “It’s Pat”. It’s a comedy that can’t make you laugh. It will just make you twitch in your theater seat waiting for the end credits.

What were they thinking? I am referring to the entire cast, the filmmakers, and Paramount, the distributor of this lame 82-minute sketch posing as a motion picture. I find it amazing that this is based on a seven-minute sketch that is not even funny. I should know, I have been watching SNL every week for about the last three years.

In the SNL sketch, we follow Steve and Doug Butabi (Chris Kataan and Will Ferell, I don’t know which one plays which) as they club hop around LA trying to get dates. It never works in the sketch, they always get shunned by the good looking girls (and usually wind up with Molly Shannon or Cheri O’Teri), and then the sketch ends. In the movie, you can’t have that, you actually have to have some sort of a story.

So here’s the story. Two guys who live with their rich parents go club hopping all over LA. Their dream is to open a night club of their own. They have a rich dad (Dan Hedaya, who is poorly trapped in every Lorne Micheals comedy and is dying to get out) who only wants them to work in a flower shop, and a mom (Loni Anderson, one of the many has-been actors in this film) who keeps getting plastic surgery. Ho ho ho. This is too much fun.

Also, the Butabi brothers have to get close to girls, because, after all, this is a movie. So they get money hungry girls who think the Butabi brothers are rich. Ho ho ho. And there’s a lot of scenes that try to be funny, such as the head twitching that gets annoying after 30 seconds, the hand dancing in the car, and the mad dancing in the club done by the brothers.

Poor Colin Quinn. As the limo driver to a club owner (played horribly by Chazz Palmenteri in an unbilled role; gee, I wonder why?), Quinn looks so sad as if he signed to this role 4 years ago and didn’t look at the fine print. And I don’t understand why Molly Shannon (as the girl next door who loves one of the brothers) looks so horrible in this movie. She is a beautiful woman, who looks great in many SNL sketches, here she just looks awful. Maybe it’s the film quality or the exposure, but she looks a LOT better than this. Not even Lochlyn Munro, who had a brief yet hilarious performance as the suicidal kid in “Dead Man on Campus”, turns in anything good. No one is let go in this crap resembling a movie.

No doubt a lot of people will see this and get apalled by the fact they blew money on parking, admission and concessions for a badly written comedy where all the laughs and joke come right on schedule, and nothing is surprising. Once again, I am happy I didn’t have to pay for this. But I still felt ripped off.

Rating: zero stars out of four

Tech Review

Pic: 2 An awful picture with bad fuzz, film grain and natural dirt. Very occasional scenes show outstanding colors, otherwise this looks 16mm

Sound: 3 The club scenes have good surrounds, otherwise this is a mostly mono film with occasional sound effects projecting across the front channels.

Photography: 2 The film is matted to 1.85:1 for a mediocre composition. Director John Fortenberrgy needs to learn how to better use this widescreen format.

Length: 82 minutes

[--- Good ---]by Paul Harris Jan 25, 2000

I have to admit this is a very dumb movie but there was some very funny parts especially if you remember the disco era. The movie takes pot shots at other movies such are Jerry Maguire and Say Anything as some of the best parts of the movie. The characters are superficial and are meant to be that way. If you are into dumb then see it.

I seldom watch Saturday Night Live. This movie was based on a sketch from that show. That said, I can honestly say I found this movie very funny. This movie is very predictable but if your in the mood for a laugh and you've already seen "Something About Mary" then this film would be a good bet.

This movie sucked

[--- Wait for Rental ---]by Stacey Frank Jan 25, 2000

If you hadn't seen any of the hundreds of previews for this movie, you might find it to be a lot funnier. Some scenes of this movie were pretty funny, while others were just dumb humor. Unfortunately, most of the best scenes were already shown on television commercials. The movie starts out in a night club and looks like it was taped on a home video camera. The theme song is played a good ten times throughout the movie. The movie's plot is typical of a silly comedy. Overall, the movie has some funny scenes, but don't expect too much. I would have been happier seeing something else and waiting for the rental.

[--- Good ---]by Chris Jan 25, 2000

Hi! My name is Chris. My thoughts of this movie is that it was very funny. You only should see this movie if your are 10 or over. They just show how hard their life is because girls hate them and how their dad is so mean. Just sit back and get ready to laugh!

The movie had a few good scenes. Very few. It looked like they were trying to copy "Dumb and Dumber" which i thought was a good movie. Sorry i can't say the same thing for this movie. You just don't if there was a point to the movie. Some movies are meant to be entertaining. Some are meant to have a point. This had neither. You don't have to stay away from the movie. Just wait for the rental. That way you don't have to worry about having to see the whole movie.

[--- See Now! ---]by Lindsey Anderson Jan 25, 2000

Okay, I hate people who say that this is a bad movie for lame reasons such as "its stupid." OF COURSE ITS STUPID! It isn't meant to be intelligent! Its just good for slapstic laughs! Here is a good line, where Steve says "Do you see planes? Is your name Tatoo? Because you are living on FANTASY ISLAND!"

If you want many good laughs, this is the movie for you! It was hilariuos!

A saw a preview of "A Night at the Roxbury" at the National in Los Angeles. I was there for the Media Workshop. I though the film was promising, But when I saw it a few months later, the film just blew up in my face. Will Farrell and Chris Kattan recreated their performances from Saturday Night Live, and they made a big mistake. The film is nothing more of an extension of a SNL stick.
