"the War of the Worlds" is the 1953 film based on the book by H.G. Wells about a martin invasion of Earth. My favorite thing in the film and I saw it as a kid, is the invasion itself. Space crafts with a huge eye attatched to the ship coming out of the fog and blast everything in sight. the special effects are the best thing about this movie.
