Arcata, CA: Minor Theatre Closed

Posted on Tuesday, February 9, 2016 1:29 PM

Minor Theatre PhotoThe Minor Theatre in Arcata, California closed on Friday, February 5, 2016. The theater's official web site and its Facebook page simply states the following:

We sincerely regret to announce that the Minor Theatre will be closing their doors for business on Friday, February 5, 2016. Please continue to visit us at the Mill Creek Cinema in McKinleyville and Broadway Cinema in Eureka.

Thank you for your patronage.

Coming Attractions Theatres

That leaves moviegoers in Arcata with just the Arcata Theatre in which to see movies without leaving town. The Mill Creek Cinema in McKinleyville is about five miles away and the Broadway Cinema in Eureka is about seven miles away, so neither is too far of a drive for fans of Coming Attractions Theatres, which owns/operates 17 locations in Alaska, California, Oregon, and Washington.

According to an article published in the North Coast Journal of Politics, People and Art, the theater's owner intends to reopen it after renovations are completed:

Josh Neff, who took ownership of the Minor Theater building and adjacent storefronts last year, says he plans to re-open the movie theater, but expects renovations to take at least a month. The theater celebrated its 100th anniversary at the end of 2014 and holds the niche historical significance of being the oldest "multi-reel feature film theater in the United States."
Neff says no one anticipated that the Minor would close so quickly — Coming Attraction’s lease on the building runs until April, and he had been negotiating with the company to stay open long enough to host the Humboldt State University student-run film festival that month.

Negotiations with the company, Neff says, were becoming more “sterile and corporate” up until the last time he spoke with representatives. Then, he says, he got an email this week saying Coming Attractions was sending a crew to dismantle the Minor's seats and equipment, which the company owns. Coming Attractions CEO John Schweiger did not return a call seeking comment.

According to our records, the theater was originally opened in 1914. Coming Attractions Theatres has operated it since 2005.
