Late yesterday, Marantz released its firmware for the AV8802A and AV8802 that enables DTS:X decoding and support for HDMI 2.0a (which enables HDR playback). In doing so, parent company D&M Holdings, Inc. (which also owns Denon) held to the date they announced in December for the first of their products to receive the firmware update. Denon's top of the line A/V receiver, the AVR-X7200WA, was updated on January 27, 2016.

Marantz AV8802A

The 11.2 channel A/V preamplifier/processor sits atop Marantz's line of processors and has an MSRP of $3,999.

For more information about the update and how to apply it to your receiver, Marantz has created the AV8802(A) DTS:X Update guide. That document mentions that the following features have been added:

  • DTS:X decoding
  • DTS Neural:X upmixing to enjoy non DTS:X content (in PCM or DTS format) using the full DTS:X speaker configuration

The following changes are included in this update as well:

  • DTS Neo:X will be replaced by DTS Neural:X
  • Dolby Surround mode usage will be limited to PCM and Dolby content

This list of changes is identical to those contained in the AVR-X7200WA update. That latter point will catch some people that have been enjoying using Dolby's Surround upmixer with movies encoded with DTS-HD Master Audio soundtracks. After this update has been applied, you will be forced to use the DTS Neural:X upmixer instead.

Additionally, the update includes support for HDMI 2.0a, which enables HDR playback from media devices, such as the new Samsung UBD-K8500 Ultra HD Blu-ray player.

If they hold to their schedule, Marantz will be updating the AV7702mkII (11.2 channel A/V preamplifier/processor), the SR7010 (11.2 channel A/V receiver), and the SR6010 (9.2 channel A/V receiver) on March 3, 2016.

Enthusiasts on the AVS Forum have begun to download the update and the first impressions of playing the already-released DTS:X titles on Blu-ray, so if you're interested, select the link below:
