To help the buying public understand what the Blu-ray high definition format has to offer, Disney took it upon themselves to create the "Magical Blu-ray Tour," which is a travelling exhibit that visits malls and other events. My original post on the tour from July 2007 when the tour kicked off had this photo of the display:
When Disney announced some 2008 Blu-ray releases at CES, they also mentioned that the tour would continue to more cities, but no schedule details were available. In a press release from Friday, they announced that seven cities will be visited by the Magical Blu-ray Tour, beginning with the Yorkdale Shopping Center in Toronto, Canada this past weekend.
"Last year, thousands of consumers in each market stopped by our Blu-ray Tour exhibit to better educate themselves on the Blu-ray format and its numerous technological advancements," stated Bob Chapek, president of Walt Disney Studios Home Entertainment. "The success of this interactive and educational vehicle helped clear up many misperceptions about high-definition in general. With that said, we are thrilled to be able to extend the tour into 2008."
The rest of the locations and dates are:
MALL | LOCATION | EVENT DATES | ||
---|---|---|---|---|
Yorkdale Shopping Center | Toronto, Canada | January 25-27 | ||
Westfarms Mall | Farmington, CT | February 15-18 | ||
Triangle Town Center | Raleigh, NC | February 22-24 | ||
Cool Springs Galleria | Nashville, TN | February 28 - March 1 | ||
North East Mall | Hurst, TX | March 7-9 | ||
Flat Iron Crossing | Denver, CO | March 14-16 | ||
UNITY 2008 Convention | Chicago, IL | July 23-27 |
Disney's 2008 Magical Blu-ray Tour will feature previews of upcoming title releases, Finding Nemo and The Chronicles of Narnia: The Lion, The Witch and The Wardrobe; live demonstrations where consumers will get first-hand experience playing the interactive "Gusteau's Gourmet Game" from Ratatouille, "Car Finder Game" from Disney/Pixar's Cars, "Bowler Hat Barrage" from Meet The Robinsons; as well as experience a virtual tour of "Enter the Maelstrom" from Pirates of the Caribbean: At World's End. The Tour helps bring this to life via six interactive stations showcasing all aspects of the Blu-ray Disc technology and a special mini-theater that hosts hourly live presentations on Blu-ray high-definition technology.
Panasonic is working with Disney on this tour, so you'll be able to see Blu-ray players and HDTV's from Panasonic on display.
Visitors will also have the opportunity to enter to win three prizes, including
- a full home entertainment package of a Panasonic 50" HDTV, a Panasonic Blu-ray player, and 10 Blu-ray titles from Disney
- Sony Playstation 3 and two Blu-ray titles from Disney
- five Blu-ray titles from Disney

After a weekend visit to three locations of the same big box retailer, whose blue and yellow logo will remain anonymous, tours like this should be a better way for good information to get out about the Blu-ray format. If you are interested in what it has to offer, check through the articles I've written in the Home Theater section of the Journal, as well as some of the resources that we have listed on the Home Theater Links page.
Whatever you do, don't count on big box retailers to supply you with information. While I'm sure that there are some big box employees that have good information, I have yet to find them. For the kind of money that these players represent, you would do well to educate yourself before making a purchase. Specialty A/V retailers can be a valuable resource, but be sure to temper their opinions and recommendations with your own knowledge as well.
