Moviegoers in Harrisburg, Illinois will be able to enjoy movies without leaving town again when the Showplace Cinemas Harrisburg opens this Friday, January 8, 2016. The area has been without a movie theater since the AMC Harrisburg 4 closed in November 2010, so people have been forced to visit the AMC Centre 8, which is 25 miles away in Marion, or to travel more than 35 miles to go to the AMC University Place 8 and AMC Showplace Carbondale 8 in Carbondale.

The new theater is located in the former Mad Pricer building at 701 North Commercial Street. It will have nine screens, including one 50-seat "Royal Suite" theater that will have upgraded seating, a more powerful sound system, and other amenities. The Royal Suite at the Showplace Cinemas East & IMAX in Evansville, Indiana charges an additional $3.50 for an adult evening ticket, but no pricing is available yet for the Harrisburg theater.

According to a recent article in the Daily Register, the new theater will have a bar and video gaming, which has raised some concern:

Locals were surprised to find out as the sign went up on the front of the building that Showplace Cinema will be offering the service onsite.

"The bar and gaming will be segregated from the theater area," [Mayor Dave] Fowler said. "I feel after everyone has a chance to see it personally they will be more comfortable."
