Hawthorne, NY: All Westchester Saw Mill Multiplex Cinemas Closed, Car Dealership Coming

Posted on Friday, January 29, 2016 5:56 PM

The All Westchester Saw Mill Multiplex Cinemas in Hawthorne, New York has closed, and it will be torn down and replaced with a car dealership, according to a recent article in The Journal News:

This weekend, as the curtains come down for the last time in preparation for the 30-year-old theater to be sold to a car dealership, movie-goers are seeing "Star Wars" and "The Revenant" and paying $13 for the experience.

Movie theaters -- as well as the expectation of people who go to them - are changing. That change is reflected in the theaters that are opening, and closing, in the Lower Hudson Valley.

"I remember when this was the theater of the future," said Joseph Verdicchio of the Crestwood section of Yonkers as he and his wife, Helen, prepared to buy tickets to see "Concussion" at the Hawthorne theater Saturday.

Mount Pleasant Supervisor Carl Fulgenzi is sad to see the Hawthorne theater go, but he points out that the same company operates the Greenburgh Multiplex Cinemas less than four miles south on Saw Mill River Road in Elmsford.

"Their business has been slowly dwindling," he said. "The other theater just a couple of miles away is a little nicer."

The proposal to bring an Audi car dealership to the site means that the property will continue to generate tax revenue for the town, he said.

"I would be more concerned if they were leaving a vacant building," he said.

Still, the All Westchester Saw Mill Multiplex has its fans.

"It will be a loss," said Tom Becker of Pleasantville as he bought tickets to see "The Revenant." "I'm sorry to see it go."

Moviegoers do have other choices in the area, including the Greenburgh Multiplex Cinemas and twelve other theaters within ten miles away.
