In 2009, director James Cameron wowed audiences with Avatar, which featured stunning visuals of a world named Pandora. In particular, Avatar in 3D made 3D cool again, because this movie is a very different movie when seen in 3D. Usually, we list movies with the 3D versions being secondary to the 2D version, but in Avatar's case, the 3D version is the one you should see if at all possible. Many movies have tried to replicate Avatar's success, and have largely fallen short. Even though the storyline was a rehash of other movies (e.g. Dances with Wolves), it is very enjoyable to watch, and used 3D as part of telling its story. Many 3D movies to come after used 3D as a gimmick, and audiences are not impressed when 3D falls flat.

Since the movie's release, people have been waiting for a sequel. In October 2010, James Cameron announced that two Avatar sequels were coming. That number has increased to four, while the release dates continued to be pushed back.

Earlier today, the official Avatar Facebook page announced that the sequels now have new release dates:

  Avatar 2 in 3D   Opens Dec 18, 2020
  Avatar 3   Opens Dec 17, 2021
  Avatar 4   Opens Dec 20, 2024
  Avatar 5   Opens Dec 19, 2025

2020 is far enough away that we might see yet another delay, but it's the best we have to go on for now!

If you haven't seen Avatar in 3D and you have a 3D TV at home, this would be a good time to return to Pandora with Avatar in 3D on Blu-ray!
