The building that once housed the Regal Cinemas Nickelodeon 5 in North Falmouth, Massachussetts has been sold to a landscaping company, effectively ending any hope of the theater reopening. The theater closed in October 2012 due to declining attendance and the costs of converting to Digital Cinema Projection systems. The Cape Cod Times published an article about the sale recently:
After a long period of inactivity and speculation about its future, the Nickelodeon Cinema building has finally found new ownership — and its movie days are over.Hamilton Tree & Landscape, based in Falmouth, finalized its purchase of the property Thursday.
"I've acquired the property with the intent of future growth within the company," said Jeff Hamilton, the owner of Hamilton Tree & Landscaping.
He said he was drawn to the location in part because of its easy access to all of Falmouth. The property ended up selling for $545,000, according to the website of the seller's agent, Cape Cod Business Brokers.
The Regal Cinemas Nickelodeon 5 on Route 151 made its mark by being one of just a few Cape cinemas to screen independent films as well as Hollywood movies. The cinema closed its doors last October after the switch from film to digital was deemed too costly for the consistently underperforming theater.
News of the sale was met with disappointment in the Cape arts community because a grass-roots group had been seeking to purchase the space for a performing arts center. Upper Cape Arts tried to raise enough money to buy the space, but the offer ultimately fell through after it failed to get the $1 million the group estimated it needed to buy and renovate the property.
"I'm disappointed we couldn't create a new arts community, but I'm sure another opportunity is just around the corner," said Annie Hart Cool, the real estate agent for Sotheby's International Realty who represented the arts group.
