IMAX Corporation and Twentieth Century Fox have announced that The Revenant, starring Leonardo DiCaprio and directed by Alejandro González Iñárritu, will be showing in select IMAX theaters starting today, January 14, 2016.
"The Revenant is a visually stunning, emotionally charged film that looks magnificent in IMAX," said Greg Foster, Senior Executive Vice President, IMAX Corp. and CEO of IMAX Entertainment. "We are excited to partner with our friends at Twentieth Century Fox and New Regency, as well as the visionary filmmaker Alejandro Gonzalez Inarritu and his two-time Academy Award®-winning cinematographer Emmanuel Lubezki in offering fans the opportunity to see this epic film in select IMAX theatres."
You can find out where and when it is playing by visiting the Showtimes page for The Revenant: The IMAX Experience.
The movie was originally released in a few select theaters on Christmas Day, with a full release starting this past Friday (January 8, 2016). It did quite well, jumping to the #2 spot last weekend. That fact, as well as the fact that current box office powerhouse Star Wars: Episode VII - The Force Awakens will be in its fifth week of release, probably opened up some slots in IMAX theaters for something other than Star Wars.
Below is a video of director Alejandro González Iñárritu announcing the IMAX release:
