An article in Home Media Magazine today quotes a Universal Studios exec as saying that Universal is now focusing on its Blu-ray efforts:
"While Universal values the close partnership we have shared with Toshiba, it is time to turn our focus to releasing new and catalog titles on Blu-ray," said Craig Kornblau, president of Universal Studios Home Entertainment.
"The path for widespread adoption of the next-generation platform has finally become clear. Universal will continue its aggressive efforts to broaden awareness for hi-def’s unparalleled offerings in interactivity and connectivity, at an increasingly affordable price. The emergence of a single, high-definition format is cause for consumers, as well as the entire entertainment industry, to celebrate."
It will be interesting to see how quickly Universal can begin releasing Blu-ray titles, and how they will handle the titles they have already released on HD DVD. Universal has been a champion of using the advanced features of HD DVD, including Picture-in-Picture video and online extras. These features are possible with Blu-ray as well, but few Blu-ray discs have been released with these features to date.
I hope that they can begin releasing day-and-date on Blu-ray and DVD in the next couple of months, but it all depends on how much preparation they have already done in anticipation of heading in the Blu direction. No word, as well, as to whether they will continue to release titles on HD DVD.
