I can, and it wasn't the Oscar-winning Rocky. It was First Blood in 1982, with Stallone as Vietnam vet John Rambo snarling his way through the movie and dispatching unfortunate pursuers with ease. It didn't win any Oscars, but it definitely left an impression, and it launched a series of sequels that appealed just as much to teenagers at the time.
To celebrate the release of the Rambo movies on DVD and Blu-ray high definition, the original movie is being re-released as a 25th Anniversary Edition to 430 theaters across the country for one night only on May 15. Viewers will be able to see an alternate ending and an interview with Sylvester Stallone, where he talks about the making of the movie and provides insights into the John Rambo franchise (which extends all the way to the 2008 release of Rambo).
If you can't make it to one of the theaters showing the movie, you'll have the home video release of all four Rambo movies to look forward to, available separately and as part of a 6-disc "Complete Collector's Set," on DVD and on Blu-ray high definition (my personal choice!).
'First Blood' Classic Returns to the Big Screen for One Night Only Dramatic Event Featuring Special Theatre-Only Stallone Interview
National CineMedia’s Fathom and Lionsgate® Present Rambo Action-Thriller in More than 430 Movie Theatres Nationwide on May 15
April 23, 2008 04:18 PM Eastern Daylight Time
CENTENNIAL, Colo.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Sylvester Stallone explodes back into select movie theatres as John Rambo in a one night special event presentation of the original “First Blood” on Thursday, May 15. This unique theatre experience will feature all of the excitement of the original action-thriller classic in a full digitally re-mastered, high-definition presentation. After the movie, fans will also experience the alternate ending that could have changed Rambo’s theatrical history forever presented for the first time on the big screen. Stallone will also give fans a unique look into the incredible story of the making of “First Blood” over 25 years ago and his unique insights into the legend and franchise of Rambo in a specially produced segment for event attendees.
Tickets for this special one-time-only “First Blood” event are available at presenting theatre box offices and online. For a complete list of presenting theatre locations and prices please visit the “First Blood” event page at www.FathomEvents.com (theatres are subject to change).
“First Blood” is presented by NCM’s Fathom and Lionsgate, Thursday, May 15 at 7:30 p.m. local time at more than 430 participating AMC, Clearview, Cinemark USA Inc., Goodrich Quality Theaters, Kerasotes ShowPlace Theatres, National Amusements and Regal Entertainment Group movie theatres, as well as the Penn Cinema (Lititz, PA) through NCM’s exclusive Digital Broadcast Network. The event celebrates the release of Rambo: The Complete Collector’s Set, a 6-disc set featuring all 4 Rambo films, on DVD May 27.
Writer, director and actor Stallone stars as war hero John Rambo, an ex-Green Beret haunted by memories of Vietnam who was once the perfect killing machine. Fans can again see where it all started in “First Blood,” where Rambo escapes from being unjustly imprisoned, using his cunning combat and weapons training to stay alive as he becomes the target in a massive manhunt.
“NCM FATHOM is excited to bring this Rambo classic back to theatres more than 25 years after the original release – but with an exciting alternative ending no one has seen on the big screen – until now,” said Dan Diamond, vice president of NCM FATHOM. “NCM FATHOM has experienced great success in bringing classics such as ‘Dirty Dancing,’ ‘Poltergeist’ and now ’First Blood’ back into theatres, giving fans an opportunity to see something specially created for the event and experience this classic on the big screen again.”
“With a fully re-mastered digital presentation, footage never seen before on the big screen and an exclusive interview with Sylvester Stallone, this event is one that Rambo fans won’t want to miss,” said Michael Rathauser, vice president of marketing for Lionsgate Home Entertainment. “We are thrilled to be partnering with NCM Fathom once again to bring the iconic John Rambo back to the big screen.”
