"Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs" Coming to Blu-ray on October 6, 2009, to DVD 7 Weeks Later

Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs will be released on Blu-ray as a Blu-ray + DVD Combo Pack on 10/6/2009 and on DVD seven weeks later.
Walt Disney Studios Home Entertainment has announced that Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs will be released on Blu-ray on October 6, 2009 as a Blu-ray + DVD Combo Pack (2 Blu-ray discs plus a DVD), and then the standard definition 2-Disc DVD will be released seven weeks later on November 24, 2009.

According to the press release, the last time the movie was available on home video was 2001, so if you're not fortunate enough to have a copy in your home library, this will not only be your chance to own the movie, but also in the highest quality form available since it was shown in theaters back in 1938! Disney has received rave reviews for their previous Platinum Combo Packs for Sleeping Beauty and Pinocchio, and this release looks to continue that heritage.

"We are thrilled that the consumer has clearly recognized the value in our Blu-ray + DVD Combo Pack releases and will have another opportunity to maximize their viewing options in October with Snow White," Bob Chapek, President of Walt Disney Studios Home Entertainment, said. "With today's technological breakthroughs found in Blu-ray, we are confident that this version of Snow White will easily become the reference point for high definition home entertainment libraries and family collections all over the world."

It's interesting that Disney is releasing the Blu-ray version first, and then the standard definition version more than a month later. This bodes well for the Blu-ray format as it continues to strive for mainstream growth in the market, and it also speaks to Disney's committment to the format. I really like the fact that they are including a full DVD copy of the movie with the Blu-ray package, as it is much more useful (in my opinion) than the more common "digital copies" that require you to activate using iTunes or Windows Media Player. Even though iPods and other portable media players are very popular, they aren't nearly as popular as DVD players, especially in living rooms, family rooms, bedrooms, and vehicles.

The press release details that the movie on Blu-ray will be in its original 1.33:1 aspect ratio and feature 7.1 DTS-HD Master Audio lossless audio. The DVD will also be in 1.33:1 and feature a 5.1 Disney Enhanced Home Theater Mix. While it doesn't mention them, I would imagine that the "Disney View" feature first introduced on the Pinnochio Blu-ray and the movie's original mono soundtrack will be provided as selectable features as well.

The Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs Blu-ray™ + DVD Combo Pack is priced at $39.99 SRP and the 2-Disc DVD set is priced at $29.99 SRP.
