Pioneer Introduces New Blu-ray Players

Posted on Friday, June 5, 2009 11:17 AM

Pioneer Electronics has announced that three new Blu-ray players are now available at retailers across the country. The Pioneer Elite® BDP-23FD, BDP-120, and BDP-320 all offer BD-Live functionality, Dolby True-HD and DTS-HD Master Audio decoders, 1080p24 playback, and USB support, with varying levels of features at a range of list prices.

Pioneer BDP-120
Pioneer DMP-120
The entry-level Pioneer BDP-120 has a list price of $299 and supports BD-Live with an included 1GB USB flash drive (the others have internal memory). It features 1080p DVD upscaling, a Quick-start mode for faster power-up, and a replay button that will rewind 10 seconds to catch missed dialog or on-screen action. High definition DVD discs recorded by digital video cameras in AVCHD format can be played, as well as BD-R/RE, DVD-R/RW, etc. recorded using Blu-ray Disc recorders or DVD recorders as well as CD/CD-R. The player is also able to display JPEG photos stored on CD-RW/R discs (it doesn't appear to support playback of any files stored on a USB-attached flash drive).

The Pioneer BDP-320 carries a suggested retail price of $399 and brings enhanced picture and audio features, 1GB of internal memory for BD-Live, 7.1 Channel analog audio outputs, and USB flash drive and HDD support. It will also play MP3's and WMA files stored on BD-R/-RE, DVD-R/-RW, and CD-R/RW discs (again, no mention in the manual about playback from an attached USB device).

The Pioneer Elite BDP-23FD steps things up a notch in both features and list price. $599 gets you the features of the lower models, plus RS-232 control functionality for integration into custom control systems, and audiophile-quality analog outputs.

The prices for the first two models are in line with that of models from other manufacturers, like Panasonic, Sony, and Samsung. Things should get interesting this holiday season as the industry competes for the attention and wallets of the buying public, so hopefully, we'll see sub-$200 players (street price) as the norm before the end of the year. The $600 price tag for the Elite model should come as no surprise to those for whom the "Elite" brand holds special emotion; they aren't known for their stinginess.

What I find disappointing in these players is the complete lack of media integration to extend functionality beyond simple disc playback. All but the base model hint at the ability to play media from a connected hard drive or flash drive, but nothing is specifically detailed in the manuals. User experience will show whether such features exist or not. Also missing is the ability to take advantage of that ethernet port used for BD-Live access for other things, like Pandora, YouTube, Netflix, Amazon-on-Demand, or in-house DLNA media playback.

Netflix and Pandora support are standard in all three Samsung Blu-ray players announced in April (and currently for sale). Now that I've had the chance to experience Pandora radio playing on something other than a computer, I will say that it's worth checking out for yourself! The new Panasonic DMP-BD60 and DMP-BD80 Blu-ray players are also offering more features at similar price points, so if doing more than watching Blu-ray discs interests you, make sure to shop around.
