"Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen: The IMAX Experience" Contains IMAX-filmed Sequences

Movie poster for Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen: The IMAX ExperienceWhen Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen opens in theaters on June 24, 2009, it will also be available in IMAX theaters as Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen: The IMAX Experience. Like last year's release of The Dark Knight and The Dark Knight: The IMAX Experience, some sequences of the new Transformers movie were shot and created in the IMAX format.

Comparison of 35mm and IMAX negativesAccording to the IMAX web site and other sources, select scenes of the Michael Bay movie were filmed with IMAX cameras and computer generated graphics (CGI) were rendered for the extra-large IMAX frame (see graphic to the right). Like in the Batman sequel, the IMAX footage will fill the taller 1.44:1 aspect ratio of IMAX and the traditional 35mm footage will be letterboxed to maintain the 2.35:1 aspect ratio of the rest of the movie.

I've seen some reports of additional footage being included in the IMAX version of the movie, but nothing definitive. For now, the running times of both are the same, but once we get some more concrete information, we'll adjust those times accordingly.

In March, an article in Variety about the demands of the visual effects in this movie mentioned that it can take several days to render a single frame. An article in the Los Angeles Times which interviewed Michael Bay mentions that special effects house Industrial Light and Magic (ILM) used 15 terabytes for the first Transformers movie, but this one consumed 140 terabytes (that's 143,360 GB for those comparing this to what's in their computers).

Want to See This Movie on a Really Big Screen? Not All IMAX Theaters are Created Equal

Keep in mind that not all IMAX theaters are the gigantic experiences that some of IMAX's marketing would have you believe. Last month, television and movie actor Aziz Ansari (Parks & Recreation, I Love You Man) ignited controversy when he attended the new Star Trek movie in an IMAX theater, and the screen was much smaller than he was expecting. (Read the Journal article Is Your IMAX Theater Giving You the MAXimum Experience? for more information)

Before you shell out the extra admission that most IMAX theaters want for what are supposed to be super-sized presentations, find out what size of screen they're using. We're tracking that information when we can find it, and theaters like Star Cinema 18 and IMAX in Madison, Wisconsin have an IMAX screen that is approximately 70' wide by 50' tall, but others, like the AMC Easton Town Center 30 with IMAX in Columbus, Ohio, can be as small as 52'x27', which is less than half the size of the larger screen.

As you can imagine, theaters with the smaller screens aren't going to be bragging about it, so it's difficult to get accurate information. We do have screen size information for a few theaters, including:

So, buyer beware. If a theater wants you to pay an extra charge to see a movie, ask them some questions and expect them to be able to answer them in order to earn that extra money!

The full press release from IMAX appears below, which includes a full list of IMAX theaters showing the movie on June 24th, but not mention of which ones are IMAX digital and which are big vs. small.
