The Lubbock Avalanche-Journal is reporting that the Showplace 6 Theatres - Lubbock in Lubbock, Texas will be closing its doors for good after the last movie plays on Sunday, August 22, 2010:
Cindy Noret, with Noret Theaters, told me that next Sunday, Aug. 22, will be the last day of operation for Showplace Six in Lubbock. This, of course, leaves Lubbock with no discount house — meaning that the only option, for those preferring indoor theaters anyway, is to see first-run movies for first-run prices at Cinemark’s Tinseltown and Movies 16.

According to information in the article, the theater opened on July 20, 1972 as a four-screen operation. It expanded to six screens in 1978, and then turned into a discount theater in the summer of 1984. According to this blog post by William Kerns on the Avalanche-Journal web site, the theater was doing "stellar" business, but the property was purchased over a decade ago by Trinity Christian School, whose expansion plans have finally come to fruition.
