The Dobie Theatres in Austin, Texas showed its last movie on Sunday, August 22, 2010. Owner Landmark Theatres chose not to renew the theater's lease.
According to a news item on News 8 Austin's web site, a lack of comfortable seating, awkward seating positions, and competitive pressures from other theaters (notably dinner theaters - there are three Alamo Drafthouse locations nearby) apparently sealed the theater's fate.
According to this article on austin360.com, the operators of the Dobie Mall were working with prospective operators for the venue, so time will tell if the theater will open again under new management. That article also mentions a new art-house theater, the Violet Crown Cinema, set to open in December in downtown Austin.
