Sony Electronics announced in a press release earlier this month that National Amusements has agreed to purchase 304 Sony 4K digital cinema projection systems to be installed in 24 locations in the United States. Sony's 4K systems project an image that is 4096 pixels by 2160 pixels, which is 4x the resolution of traditional 2K digital cinema systems and your 1080p HDTV. (See the link for why this may not be as big an improvement as it sounds)
This announcement covers approximately one third of the screens under National Amusements' brands of Showcase Cinemas, Multiplex Cinemas, and Cinema de Lux in the U.S., United Kingdom, and Latin America. The implementation of the new systems is scheduled for completion by summer 2011.
The press release also mentions that National Amusements also plans to equip about 40% of all its screens for 3D digital projection, using RealD technology.
National Amusements currently has 54 locations in the United States and United Kingdom.
