When you've got the home theater bug bad, and you want your HD super-sized...

Posted on Wednesday, August 16, 2006 and updated on Wednesday, August 16, 2006 1:11 PM

People who get bitten by the home theater bug can be excused for their exuberance over their hobby. After all, what other hobby delivers as much bang for the buck? Certainly not that snowmobile or jet ski that sees action a few days on a good month, and only during the appropriate season...

In home theater, a bigger picture is usually better. If you can fill up about 30° of your field of vision, you've got a good thing going. Some prefer more, and some prefer less, but that means that you can sit 8 feet away from that new 61" diagonal rear projection television and have an immersive visual experience.

But what happens when you have a larger room, and/or you really want a big image? Well, you buy a projector and a screen, and you can enlarge that picture to suit your needs, so long as the projector you buy is up to the task of providing such a large image.

But what happens when you don't want to have a projector and a screen, and you want a cool-looking flat panel display instead? Last month, Panasonic announced that it was going to bring out its 103" diagonal plasma (that's about 90" wide for those of us who don't subscribe to antiquated screen measurements) for the holidays.

At the bargain price just shy of $70,000, this isn't for the masses, but if the price doesn't bother you, then you just know you have to be the first kid on the block to have one!

Such is the case of Mark Cuban, millionaire owner of the Dallas Mavericks and certifiable home theater fanatic. He loves high definition television so much, he decided to create a new high definition network (HDNet) when he was upset with the lack of HD programming. According to the New York Post (click the read link), Mark's got his eyes on one of these 103-inch wonders, and he wants to be the very first person in America to have one. He's reportedly putting the squeeze on Panasonic to get his ahead of anyone else that might be on the waiting list, and is making plans to take a Sawzall to his house to get it to fit.

And before you start to wonder at the priorities of someone that would spend $70,000 on a TV, don't forget to clean that $30,000 pool that you only use a few days a year, and get the oil changed on that luxury car in your garage. Everyone's got toys...
