Regal Adding IMAX Conversions to Theaters in New York City, San Diego, and Washington D.C.

Posted on Tuesday, March 15th, 2011 4:38 PM by Scott Jentsch

Regal Entertainment Group announced this week that they will be doing IMAX conversions soon at three locations:

New York City Area – UA Westbury Stadium 12
San Diego Area – Regal Parkway Plaza 18
Washington, DC Area – Regal Cinemas Manassas Stadium 14

"Regal is extremely proud to add The IMAX Experience to these already very popular theatres. We've seen a strong preference by our patrons to choose the superior presentation offered by IMAX," stated Greg Dunn, President and Chief Operating Officer for Regal Entertainment Group. "Our patrons appreciate the crystal clear images and impressive IMAX sound systems. Regal looks forward to the terrific slate of IMAX films scheduled for release this year."

These conversions will be done using the now-popular method of converting an existing auditorium to install a new screen, an IMAX digital projection system, and IMAX sound system. All three will have 3D capability as well.

Other IMAX installations at Regal locations (as well as every IMAX-equipped theater that we know of) charge an additional fee for the "IMAX Experience." At the UA Sheepshead Bay 14 in Brooklyn, New York, that upcharge amounts to $6.50 over the normal $12.50 ticket price for an adult evening admission. That's a pretty significant upcharge!

The press release from Regal mentions an April 2011 completion goal for these conversions.
