Moviegoers in the Chicago suburb of Mount Prospect, Illinois will have a new theater at which to see movies, starting on Friday, April 29, 2011. The AMC Randhurst 12 will open on Friday in the Randhurst Village "lifestyle center," just across the parking lot from the AMC Randhurst 16, which it is presumably replacing.
Located at the intersection of Rand Road (Rt. 12) and Elmhurst Road (Rt. 83), the Randhurst Village center has been undergoing a massive reconstruction project, as these overhead images from Bing Maps (before) and Google Maps (during) show. Phase one of the reconstruction project involves the opening of this theater, as well as Tony Sacco's Coal Oven Pizza, the Billy Goat Tavern, Old Navy, Charming Charlies, Carter's, and Subway over the course of 2011.
The AMC Randhurst 12 is located five miles from the Willow Road interchange with I-294, which makes it convenient to a large number of people. There are four other movie theaters within about five miles of its location.
According to the press release issued today by AMC Entertainment, the new 12-screen theater will be the first in the area equipped with all Digital Cinema Projection systems, which will be equipped with Sony 4K systems that are capable of more resolution than traditional Digital Cinema projection systems (see the Help Document for more information about why this may not always translate into a better image on the screen).
Each auditorium will feature stadium seating, with 21" risers and 48" spacing between rows, so that you have a clear view of the screen. Hopefully, this spacing doesn't create a situation where too many rows are too low and/or too far away from the screen. The sound system in each will have 6-channel digital audio, so it doesn't sound like the 7.1 sound formats that have been produced for movies like Toy Story 3 will be able to be enjoyed in their full glory.
The new theater will also be Chicago's first LEED-certified movie theater, which means that various aspects of the construction, design, and operations and maintenance are environmentally sustainable. A search of the U.S. Green Building Council's web site (the people who issue the LEED certifications) found the theater under "Registered Projects" but no certification has been assigned yet, so there's no way to know which level of certification the project was able to achieve.
The AMC Randhurst 12 will feature one of AMC's big-screen concept ETX auditoriums. This auditorium will feature a larger screen and upgraded sound system over and above the other eleven auditoriums, but there's no indication that 7.1 will be supported.
At other AMC locations that have ETX installations, there is a surcharge for attending shows of about $4-$6, so you can expect to pay extra for the pleasure.
The new location will feature a full-service bar and lounge area called "MacGuffins" where guests 21 and over can enjoy a variety of beer, wine, and cocktails. The lounge will be open daily from 4pm - 11pm.
All guests will be able to enjoy a concession menu that offers more than just soda, candy, and popcorn. Soda choices increase from the usual six or seven to more than 100 with a new Coca-Cola Freestyle machine that allows guests to create their own personal drink mixes. Supplementing the candy and popcorn, the following food choices will be available:
- Chicken tenders
- Mozzarella sticks
- French fries
- Hot dogs and bratwurst
- Ice cream and shakes
- Espresso, cappuccino, lattes
As with most all AMC locations, you'll be able to order tickets online so you can save the wait at the box office and score the freshest popcorn and best seats ahead of everyone else that wasn't as smart as you. We should have showtimes for the theater in the next few days, so just look for the yellow movie ticket symbol and the showtimes that appear as links for your opportunity to display your clicking skills.
Opening Weekend Events
To celebrate its grand opening the AMC Randhurst 12 will be holding some special promotions during this week and over its opening weekend.
Today and Wednesday, you can see some movies for free when the box office opens at 6pm. You need to print out the PDF Flyer, which is good for up to two admissions. Seating is limited and on a first-come, first-served basis, so don't blame us if it's very busy!
On Friday from 6-7pm, Radio Disney will be on site in conjunction with the Glass Slipper Project and the opening of the new Disney movie Prom. If you donate a dress, you'll receive a Prom gift bag.
Then, WTMX-FM (The Mix) will be on hand from 7:30pm-9:30pm with giveaways and prizes.
