The Malco Raleigh Springs Cinema in Memphis, Tennessee closed on December 6, 2011. The Commercial Appeal mentions in an article published last week that the theater closed due to poor attendance and a bleak outlook for the area:
The closing was inevitable, according to Malco officials.
The area's largest enclosed shopping center when it opened in 1971, the million-square-foot Raleigh Springs Mall at 3384 Austin Peay has fallen on hard times in recent years, losing its department-store "anchor" tenants and most of its other businesses. The last of the mall's anchor stores, Sears, closed April 3. The other three -- J. C. Penney, Dillard's and Goldsmith's -- closed in 2003.
"Sometimes you're just a victim of the times," said Malco executive vice president Jimmy Tashie. "I'm afraid in that area, the business is just not there now. As the mall lost its retail and traffic, it became a losing proposition."
Apparently, the theater was operating with just two of its twelve screens because of the lack of business. Click the Read link below to view the full article.
Fortunately for moviegoers in the area, there are over a dozen theaters within 15 miles, including the Malco Bartlett Cinema 10, about four miles away.
