The Royale in Mesa, Arizona closed its doors on December 24, 2011. A message on the front page of their web site tells the news:
Five years in the making and six months in reality, The Royale will close its doors Christmas Eve 2011. “Although an incredibly difficult decision, we are not in a position to take the business to the next-level of growth that it needs to be sustainable”. The last official screening will be of the Cult 1970s film BLACK CHRISTMAS Saturday December 24th at 9pm on Christmas Eve.
According to the site, The Royale described itself as "A retro grindhouse in the heart of Downtown Mesa, The Royale is a community arts venue & theater space styled after the film palaces of yesteryear which plays host to a unique mix of the newest independent films & retro cult classics." Its auditorium seated 48 people.
