|Home: BigScreen Journal - Milwaukee, WI: Grand Cinemas May Host Downtown Information Center|
The Business Journal of Greater Milwaukee is reporting that several groups are trying to create a downtown information center at the Grand Cinemas, which hasn't shown movies to the public since 1995:
The West Wisconsin Avenue Workgroup, appointed by Mayor Tom Barrett to help revitalize the neighborhood, is working on the project with Milwaukee Downtown Business Improvement District 21, Visit Milwaukee and The Marcus Corp., which owns the ground lease on the theater at West Wisconsin Avenue and North Second Street, Milwaukee. They plan to upgrade the facade and use the ticket booth and marquee to provide information to visitors and new downtown residents.
Milwaukee Downtown has committed to staffing the center at least 40 hours a week, said Beth Nicols, executive director. Visit Milwaukee plans to assist with staffing, materials and planning events in front of the theater, said Paul Upchurch, president and chief executive officer. Nicols hopes the center can open by the end of the year.
