|Home: BigScreen Journal - Hamburg, PA: Strand Theatre May Close|
The Hamburg Strand Theatre in Hamburg, Pennsylvania is in danger of closing due to some difficulties booking movies against its competition and the need to pay its debts.
WTXF-TV in Philadelphia has an article that relates the owner's woes:
The Strand has done a great job collecting memories. They have the original projector from 1920. They have ticket stubs and the original red seats. Some of the old movies can be found in the basement. What The Strand is not collecting is a lot of money. Bill Rhodes bought the theater four years ago and wanted to bring back some of that movie magic. The problem is that this old time theater is the scene of a modern day drama. The theater has 198 seats, but Bill says it is losing out because Hollywood gives the first movies to the bigger theaters.
