The Cape Cod Times is reporting that the Provincetown Film Society Inc. has purchased the 70-seat Whaler's Wharf Cinema in Provincetown, Massachusetts:
The new nonprofit bought Whaler's Wharf Cinema for $450,000 and will offer year-round screenings of newly released films made with relatively small budgets and from distributors outside mainstream movie-making. The cinema serves as the new year-round home of the film society and the Provincetown International Film Festival, which was founded in 1999.
The movie house at 237 Commercial St. provides an anchor for independent "art house" films in the easternmost towns of Cape Cod, with the closest competitor an hour's drive away in Dennis.
"We're really trying to make Provincetown and the Outer Cape a place for filmmakers to come and have an outlet, a place to do things," film festival Executive Director Gabrielle Hanna said Wednesday. "That's the reason for buying the cinema and wanting a year-round presence."
