The Brenden Pittsburg 16 in Pittsburg, California is set to close in April 2012, according to an article that appeared in the Contra Costa Times. The theater has been running for 22 years, and was Brenden Theatre Corp's first location, but the property owner chose not to renew their lease.
Moviegoers can take heart, though, as a new operator has already been chosen, and they are hoping to re-open the theater in late May or June 2012. Along with bringing in Maya Cinemas to run the 16-screen theater, it will be renovated:
Maya Cinemas plans to renovate the theater inside and out once the Brenden closes, said Frank Haffar, company president and chief operating officer. The goal is to reopen by Memorial Day weekend or early June, he said.
"We don't just plan on giving it a paint job; we plan on a drastic retrofit that will give (patrons) a completely new experience," Haffar said.
Among the changes Haffar listed are new reclining seats, sound systems and a digital projection system with larger screens inside the theater. The outside will also get a new look.

This change leaves Brenden Theatres with six other locations in Arizona, California, and Nevada, and will increase the Maya Cinemas chain to three, adding to the locations they have in Bakersfield and Salinas, California.
Until the theater re-opens, moviegoers will have other options nearby, such as the Brenden Concord 14 in Concord and the AMC Deer Valley 16 in Antioch. Both are less than 10 miles away, and there are nine other theaters within 15 miles as well.
