The Bonham Theater in Fairbury, Nebraska closed on August 2, 2012, citing lack of funds to make the necessary upgrades to Digital Cinema Projection systems.

The Lincoln Journal Star published an article with comments from owner Allen Hinkle and some additional information about the transition the movie theater industry is experiencing:

For years, Hinkle faced a costly digital upgrade and little interest from buyers, forcing him to close the Fairbury theater after showing “Ice Age: Continental Drift” and “The Dark Knight Rises.”

The theater has been a staple of downtown Fairbury since 1926 -- best known for its giant 33-foot screen, booming surround sound and coconut-oil popcorn.

But without an owner and in need of more than $100,000 in upgrades, it could be the last time Fairbury residents see the newest blockbuster so close to home.

Moviegoers in the Fairbury area will need to visit the Majestic Theatre in Hebron or the Cinema Centre & Holly Theatre in Beatrice, both of which are more than 20 miles away.
