The Tolkien Week celebration encompasses the 75th anniversary of the publication of J.R.R. Tolkien's "The Hobbit" novel and the worldwide celebration of Hobbit Day. Hobbit Day and Tolkien Week were first proclaimed by the American Tolkien Society in 1978, with Hobbit Day landing on September 22nd, the birthday shared by both Bilbo and Frodo Baggins. (These two characters are the basis for The Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings stories, respectively.)
