Do you have a movie fan on your gift list this year? Before you get them a fur-covered remote control cover, or some other item that you never see at any time other than the panic-driven shopping days before the holidays, consider getting them something they'll actually use and enjoy.
Popcorn and movies go together so well. They are indelibly linked in our subconcious to the point that thinking about movies makes us hungry for popcorn and smelling popcorn being popped makes us think about watching a movie. What better gift could you give someone than a way for them to make great theater-style popcorn at home?
Microwave popcorn is king for convenience, but like microwave burritos, it's not going to win any awards in its category. With the following items, anyone can make great-tasting popcorn pretty quickly and pretty inexpensively.
I think West Bend has been making the West Bend 82306 Stir Crazy 6-Quart Electric Popcorn Popper since movies were only in black & white (well, almost), but why mess with a good thing? It provides all the tools you need to make great popcorn, including the bowl! The stirring stick keeps the popcorn from burning and the holes in the top allow the steam to escape, keeping your popcorn from getting chewy.
In any project, you get the best results when you use the right tool, and the Stir Crazy is the best I've found, and at less than $27 at Amazon.com, it's a great value, too!
Using the right ingredients is key to great-tasting popcorn, and until recently, I've always relied on the trusty jar of Orville Redenbacher that I kept in the refrigerator. After all, how could that kindly old man in the commercials steer us wrong? The problem was, the results weren't always the greatest, and I have found out that the biggest problem was not the product, but the user.
It turns out, refrigerating popcorn isn't a good idea, since it will dry out the kernels and rob them of the moisture they need to produce a good popped result. Even if I keep the jar in the cuboard, I'm still losing moisture as the days go by after first opening the jar. So, what to do? I can't eat popcorn every day of the week, so how can I enjoy an occasional bowl of popcorn and be assured of the best quality possible?
Enter the 4-ounce packs of Great Northern Popcorn! Not only do these packs have just the right amount of popcorn (making about 5 quarts of popped corn), they have included just the right amount of coconut oil (the best kind for popcorn), as well as a flavoring packet that will make you think you are in the movie theater!
We empty the entire contents of the packet into the Stir Crazy popper and let it go to work. No measuring, no using stale popcorn, and it smells great! All at less than $1 per packet.
The link above is for 24 packets, so if that's more than you think they'll use, you can split the popcorn between you and your gift, and you both will have great-tasting popcorn to enjoy.
If you want to bypass the Stir Crazy's built-in bowl, you can get fancy with thematic popcorn bags or tubs. There are so many choices; re-usable bowls, paper bags, and even disposable paperboard tubs that will complete the at-the-movies experience.

There you have it. A simple, relatively inexpensive gift package that any movie lover would be thrilled to receive. Not only do they get to enjoy great popcorn every time they enjoy a movie, the fact that you put some thought into it instead of just buying whatever was in the bin near the checkout counter will mean more to them as well.
This gift will also serve as a test. If they don't invite you over for a movie night and serve you some of this great popcorn, you know that a fur-covered remote control cover is in their future...
Since we like to give credit where credit is due, the article on the Read link pointed me to using the Great Northern Popcorn packets with the Stir Crazy. He even goes an extra step and bakes the popcorn to dry it out, which I haven't tried... yet. Give it a read, it's well worth looking at!
