|Home: BigScreen Journal - San Jose, CA: Winchester Domes in Jeopardy Under Development Proposal|
A big new shopping center, office towers and residences could replace several of the Century movie theaters near the Winchester Mystery House in San Jose under a plan to lease the property, realty agents said Wednesday.
The site being eyed for redevelopment includes the Century theaters on Winchester Boulevard near Interstate 280. The theaters' domes are a familiar sight in the area, and the theatres have over the decades played many blockbuster films.

Right now, the plans are just plans, but with the theater's leases coming due and the historical difficulty that low-screen-count movie theaters have with being successful, it wouldn't be a surprise to see wrecking balls replacing box office lines at those theaters in the near future. The nearby dome theater, The Retro Dome, closed on January 30, 2013 (view article).
The Century 21 opened November 24, 1964. You can see a print ad from the theater's opening on our Photo Gallery page for the theater.
