Bill Murray Suggests Leads for All-Female "Ghostbusters" Movie

Posted on Tuesday, September 9, 2014 10:12 AM

A new Ghostbusters movie has been rumored for quite some time (Ghostbusters came out in 1984 and is celebrating its 30th Anniversary with a re-release, and Ghostbusters II was released in 1989). We even have a placeholder entry for it, tentatively titled Ghostbusters III, with no date attached.

Whether it was going to be a sequel or a reboot has been up in the air, but I would imagine that Bill Murray's unwillingness to return to his role as Dr. Peter Venkman had a lot to do with it. Ivan Reitman directed the first two movies and was going to direct a third movie, should they get that far, but the passing of Ghostbuster Harold Ramis earlier this year played into Reitman's decision to pass on the director's chair.

The last thing that any Ghostbusters fan would want is for the third installment to be a derivative re-hash, or for it to feature Shia LaBeouf and/or crystal alien skulls. In some ways, perhaps the best choice for a new movie is not to make a sequel at all.

That's why a reboot has some promise. Take the original idea, put a new spin on it, and let it stand on its own. It's worked for James Bond, Batman, and even Spider-Man. One concept that has been getting some traction is the idea to make a rebooted Ghostbusters team be all women, and at the Toronto International Film Festival, Bill Murray even weighed in on who he would like to see suit up:

Bill Murray has heard the rumours about an all-female reboot of his Ghostbusters comedy classic — and not only is he in favour of it, he has casting suggestions.

“I’m fine with it,” Murray says. “I would go to that movie, and they’d probably have better outfits, too.”

He’s not involved in the project, and the sequel-averse comic actor has long resisted the idea of making a third chapter of the original 1980s franchise that teamed him with Dan Aykroyd, the late Harold Ramis and Ernie Hudson as New York City spook chasers.

Yet he’s got ideas when asked which women he’d like to don the Ghostbusters jumpsuits and proton packs. One of his preferred candidates is Melissa McCarthy, his co-star in St. Vincent, the dramedy that had its world premiere at TIFF on the weekend.

“Melissa would be a spectacular Ghostbuster. And Kristen Wiig is so funny — God, she’s funny!

“I like this girl Linda Cardellini (Mad Men) a lot. And Emma Stone is funny. There are some funny girls out there.”

An all-female Ghostbusters may well be in the offing — Tina Fey and Amy Poehler are also rumoured candidates — and Bridesmaids director Paul Feig has expressed a strong desire to make one.

His casting ideas aren't bad, but maybe a little too polarizing to actually happen, especially in the case of McCarthy. She's taken on, and become somewhat known for, some crass roles. While some may appreciate her brand of humor, it may not be approachable enough to attract a wide audience. She can grab the Bridesmaids fanbase, but her latest vehicle (this summer's Tammy) did not fare well with critics and moviegoers alike (Metacritic shows it to have a 39 out of 100 from critics and 3.3 out of 10 from moviegoers). Given that Bridesmaids director Paul Feig is now attached as the director, she may have a good chance, however.

Murray's other ideas of Kristen Wiig, Linda Cardellini, and Emma Stone are better. Tina Fey and Amy Poehler have proven that they work well together, so their chemistry may help their chances as well.

What do you think? Who should play the Ghostbusters in the reboot?
