Birmingham, MI: Palladium 12 Closed

Posted on Tuesday, September 9, 2014 2:52 PM

Theater PhotoThe Palladium 12 in Birmingham, Michigan closed on September 1, 2014.

According to an article published recently by the Downtown Birmingham/Bloomfield, the building's owner is renovating the building pretty extensively:

On June 25, Jordan Jonna, of A.F. Jonna, came before the Birmingham Planning Board requesting final site plan approval, which he received, with conditions, for the renovation of the building. It has yet to move to the city commission for final approvals.

Jordan Jonna did not return calls for this article.

Jonna plans to renovate the Palladium Building from two levels of retail and two movie theater levels to one story of retail, two stories of office, a modified movie theater, underground parking and three rooftop residential units. The first floor will continue to be retail or restaurants, and the development company has three Class C liquor licenses. Jonna intends to convert the basement level retail space into underground parking with 56 parking spaces to support the new office and residential uses proposed in the building.

The current second floor, now part of the Palladium movie theater, will be split into two floors of office space. The existing third floor of the building is proposed to remain as a movie theater, although it would now become the fourth floor. At the planning board, Jordan Jonna told board members they intend to change the theaters "from 2,300 to 600 seats."

The theater was purchased by Cloud Nine Theater Partners LLC. in April, which also operates The Maple Theater in nearby Bloomfield Hills. From the looks of various news articles that could be found regarding the Palladium building, it seems as though many of the spaces in the building were empty.

Until the theater reopens, moviegoers in the area will need to visit the Birmingham 8 in town, the MJR Troy Grand Digital Cinema 16 in Troy, or one of the other 15 nearby theaters.
