Los Angeles, CA: New Beverly Cinema Bucks the Digital Cinema Trend and Goes 35mm Only

Posted on Tuesday, September 9, 2014 4:56 PM

With theaters around the country pulling out their 35mm film projectors in order to install the Digital Cinema Projection systems that the industry is transitioning to, the New Beverly Cinema  Los Angeles, California is doing just the opposite.

The theater had reportedly seen the proverbial light and gotten its digital projection system installed some time ago. In a time when many small independent theaters are going out of business because they can't afford to make the transition, this should have made moviegoers at the New Beverly very happy indeed.

Except that it didn't make the building's owner very happy at all. When Quentin Tarantino (director and screenwriter of such movies as Pulp Fiction, Django Unchained, and more) found out that the theater removed the 35mm film projector and replaced it with a digital cinema system, he intervened, had the new equipment removed, the old projection equipment reinstalled, and he took over as Head Programmer for the theater.

See the news articles below for more information:

Movies at the theater have been suspended for the month of September, but the Indiewire article above says that programming will begin again in October.

As long as the New Beverly is content with playing films from Tarantino's collection, and perhaps the collections of others that are holding onto movies on film, they probably won't have a problem finding something to play there. Unfortunately, if the audience doesn't want to see those movies, and the studios aren't willing to make prints of new movies especially for hold-outs like the New Beverly, they are going to have a tough road ahead of them. While taking the stance of "you can take my film from my cold dead hands" is admirable in some respects, it will relegate the theater to that of a museum attraction as time goes on.
