The Bob Bullock IMAX Theatre in Austin, Texas has closed temporarily while it is being converted from its original film projection system to a digital system. According to the theater's web site, the construction began on January 9, 2015 and they have an anticipated grand re-opening date of January 29th.
This conversion comes at a time when the movie theater industry has been converting almost all theaters from the traditional film-based projectors to digital projectors that play movies stored digitally on computer-based servers. Long known for its really big screens filled with images made possible through the use of 70mm film (the largest film stock possible for making and projecting movies), IMAX has gradually been converting its theaters in much the same way, often using dual 2K projectors which not only add to the brightness on the screen, but also provide for 3D capability as well.
The new projection system will be illuminating a new 65-foot-wide screen that is being installed. They needed to cut a hole in the building to get the screen inside. Backing all that up is an upgraded audio system.
The museum hired Josh Jacobs in October as the new Director of Film and Theater. Jacobs previously served as director for the Alamo Drafthouse Cinema's Rolling Roadshow.
"The conversion of the theater will bring two digital projectors, a new sound system, a new screen and a whole lot of fun to the visitor's experience," Jacobs said. "Although I am sad to see the 70mm go away, I understand that this shift is driven by the industry, and I am excited for all the programming opportunities that the digital conversion will allow. I look forward to broader offerings from IMAX®, all the major studios, as well as the ability to show repertory films and alternative content."
They plan to re-open on January 29, 2015 to show Game of Thrones® The IMAX Experience. Keep an eye on the Showtimes page for the Bob Bullock IMAX Theatre, as we will have their showtimes here when they resume operations!
For more information on the museum's progress, including photos of the new equipment being installed, please see the museum's web site at the Read link below.
Until then, this isn't the only IMAX theater in Austin. The AMC Barton Creek Square 14 and Regal Gateway Stadium 16 & IMAX are less than ten miles away and showing mainstream movies, such as American Sniper: The IMAX Experience.
