I think Neil Patrick Harris did a good job hosting this year's ceremony. He kept things going while providing some comedic moments. While not as memorable as Billy Crystal, I'll take "not bad" any time over some of the train wrecks that have come before.
One of the sequences that I appreciate from each year's ceremony is the "In Memorium" montage, which pays tribute to those in the industry that are no longer with us. Rather than show short clips of the actors in one of their memorable performances, they only showed an illustration of each person. I think this blunted the effectiveness of the sequence, and I wasn't left with the urge to see those actors in a movie like I have been in the past.
Even though I am not a fan of Lady Gaga, her tribute to Julie Andrews and the 50th Anniversary of the release of The Sound of Music was quite good. Any time we can see Julie Andrews is a good time, so watching her on stage presenting the award for Best Original Score was a pleasure.
You can catch some of the winning and nominated movies still playing in some theaters, so check out the listing above or the Academy Award® Winners and Nominees page in Now Showing for a complete run-down of those that are still playing.
