When it comes to saccharine, feel-good films, Quentin Tarantino isn't the director you want. He's directed such movies as "Kill Bill Vol. 1" (& "Vol. 2"), "Pulp Fiction," and "Reservoir Dogs." He wrote the story for "Natural Born Killers" and produced such happy movies as "Hostel" and "From Dusk Till Dawn." He also directed a portion of "Sin City" with Robert Rodriguez, with whom he's done several other projects (including some of the aforementioned movies). Rodriguez has done a wide array of work, ranging from "Once Upon a Time in Mexico" to the "Spy Kids" movies.
Given these facts, it's a good thing that the two filmmakers decided to work together to make a horror movie like "Grindhouse" instead of "The Lake House 2." The question is, are you ready for what they have to offer?
Fans of Tarantino are no doubt chomping at the bit to see it. The fact that Rodriguez is involved brings in more fans. However, for a movie to be really successful, it often needs to go beyond attracting that "low hanging fruit" and grab the attention of mainstream audiences. Watching the trailers for the movie makes me interested in seeing it, but I question whether it will be able to capture the necessary attention or just be a brief blip on the radar as we move towards the summer blockbuster season?
The best thing "Grindhouse" has going for it is that the competition is a little weak. There is a limited release of Richard Gere's "The Hoax," which is about a guy who tried to get away with writing a fictitious autobiography of Howard Hughes. This past Wednesday and Thursday offered up "Are We Done Yet?," "Firehouse Dog," and "The Reaping." The real competition is going to come from last week's holdovers and box office contenders "Blades of Glory," "Meet the Robinsons," and "300."
Good luck "Grindhouse" but I'll probably catch you on HD DVD...
