I'm of the opinion that sequels nearly require that the original cast be involved for them to succeed in continuing the story and the tone of a series.
Recent news from The Hollywood Reporter that Rachel Weisz will not be part of "The Mummy 3" is disappointing news for the prospects of the movie in my book. According to the article, Universal Pictures cited scheduling conflicts as the reason. Uh huh.
The movie has managed to sign on Brendan Fraser and Jet Li, but considering that there was no sequel in the works for "Dudley Do-Right," Fraser probably didn't have the same scheduling conflicts as the Oscar-winning actress.
"The Mummy" was a surprise hit in 1999 and the sequel "The Mummy Returns" did pretty well in 2001. There was also a spin-off movie called "The Scorpion King" starring The Rock which didn't make as many waves, but wasn't half-bad for what it was.
