"Transformers" Hits Big on DVD and HD DVD

Posted on Wednesday, October 24th, 2007 5:03 PM by Scott Jentsch

This summer's blockbuster hit "Transformers" was released on DVD and HD DVD last week, and the initial sales numbers are favorable for Dreamworks Pictures and Paramount Pictures, the studios behind the movie.

According to their press release (below), the DVD held the top spot among new releases with 8.3 million units sold, with 4.5 million sold on its first day. Additionally, the movie was also released on high definition disc exclusively on HD DVD (the first big hit as a result of Paramount's decision to release high definition movies on HD DVD only), with over 100,000 units sold on its first day and 190,000 overall. While these are very low numbers compared to the DVD, they are very good numbers for high definition discs on either format.

Two separate DVD releases are available; a single-disc edition and a 2-disc Special Edition that features lots of extras for the movie. The HD DVD release ups the ante with cool extra features made available by the format, including a heads-up display that updates you on the status of each robot during skirmishes, detailed models of the robots, and online features that are downloaded to the HD DVD player from Paramount's servers. The HD DVD is receiving high marks from reviewers for its great picture and high quality sound.
