Opened in 1933 as the single-screen Midtown Theater. Renamed to the Metro Theater in 1982 and showed primarily arthouse movies. It was twinned when purchased by Clearview Cinemas in 1986 and named Clearview's Metro Twin. Clearview closed this location in 2004.

It was purchased and reopened later in 2004 by Embassy Cinemas as the Metro Theater (aka Metro Twin), but closed in 2005. Alamo Drafthouse Cinema planned to reopen the theater as a 5-screen location in 2012, but scrapped those plans in 2013. The building was sold in Apr 2025 to the Upper West Side Cinema Center.
