This is one of those movies that has a nice setup, a good cast to make it happen, and a dark and gloomy setting to match the tone of the movie. Unfortunately, it doesn't quite seem to put all the pieces together to make a truly compelling and effective movie.

The movie depends upon three primary characters: Jim Sturgess plays newbie doctor that comes to Stonehearst Asylum to practice, Ben Kingsley as the administrator of said asylum, and Kate Beckinsale as a captivating and mysterious patient. All is not as it seems, especially when it comes to these three characters, but there is plenty of misdirection to go around and we soon find out that things are not right at Stonehearst Asylum.

Unfortunately, the movie doesn't do as much as it might have with the talent of David Thewlis and Michael Caine. Thewlis chews up every scene he's in and it tends to expose the shortcomings present in the acting and character development of the others.

I do have to hand it to the movie in that it delivered a great twist near the end that I didn't see coming. However, even that success doesn't pay off in making the rest of the movie better. This is worth renting or catching on a streaming service (like I did), but it wouldn't have been worth the price of admission at a theater.
