Whenever King Kong (or any of the monsters) were on screen, I was 100% on board with and loving the action of the film. The visuals of the creatures and aesthetics of the island were amazing.

Unfortunately, this is where the praises end. The faults of this movie come in the writing of the characters. Nearly every single character had a single motivation the entire time, and no matter what evidence SHOULD have swayed their motivations, they were just stubborn for the sake of the movie needing a climactic ending (I'm talking about you, Samuel L. Jackson). John C. Reilly's character was my favorite of the bunch, and even he was a walking exposition machine. The cast is absolutely stellar, including Tom Hiddleston, Brie Larson, John Goodman, John C. Reilly, Samuel L. Jackson, and even Toby Kebell, just to name a few. Still, their characters were lifeless, bland, and dull.

Overall, the movie should have been better than what it was. With stellar visual effects and a spectacular ensemble cast, it's just a shame the film spends so much time with characters that we don't care about, who seemed to be written to be as anti-compelling as possible.

"Kong: Skull Island" is an entertaining movie which combines the monster movie with "Apocalypse Now" complete with helicopters and a rocking music score which reflect the period in time. the movie takes place in 1973 at the last days of the Vietnam War where a army unit to Skull Island some 50 miles off the coast of Vietnam led by Samuel L. Jackson. After they attack the Island they learn that it was over run my monster. the largest of the group is King Kong. Also in the cast is John Goodman, Brie Lawson (who looks like Chrisey Tieigeon), Tom Hiddleston and John C. Reilly. Stay for the credits, after that there is a scene that might be the next "Godzilla" movie.

It's fun while Kong is on screen, but unfortunately, the filmmakers left everything else fall to the wayside.

I'm a fan of Peter Jackson's 2005 version of King Kong. After a recent viewing of that movie, I noticed that the CGI hasn't aged well, but the heart of the movie that left an impression back then still strikes a positive chord with me today. I remember describing that movie as a love triangle between a man, a woman, and an ape. The fact that the latter participant just happens to be an extra large primate that lives in a jungle inhabited by prehistoric creatures is secondary to the primary story and interaction of the characters.

Fast-forward to 2017 and we have this very different version of the Kong legend. I look at it as more of an extension of the Kong "universe" rather than a replacement, where this Kong is much larger and shows very little of the personality and character that the 2005 Kong did.

The special effects are top-rate. I rarely noticed instances of a disconnect between live action and effects. I was disappointed in the sound mix, but I blame that on the theater that I attended (Marcus has never been stellar with their sound systems) and look forward to seeing it again at home for a better experience in that regard.

This movie is obviously a precursor to Godzilla vs. Kong, which is due in 2020. Kong's new larger size will be a better match to Godzilla, and the events here are basically an origin story for that movie.

When compared to the 2005 King Kong, this one does disappoint. Those hoping to see Brie Larson form a personal connection with the big guy will be disappointed, but I would say that story has already been told, several times. This is a different story. It's a monster movie. I enjoyed the 2014 Godzilla movie a little more than this one, but both were pretty lacking in the story and character development department.

As a monster movie, I found it entertaining, and I think it will be better upon seeing it a second time.

Of the three "King Kong" or "Kong" this is the lease or lowest quality. poor acting, truly lousy script. The original 1933 version is still by far the best, Peter Jackson's version is just barely better than this "Kong" release. I really wouldn't even recommend buying or renting this one. I wasted my monies seeing this movie.
