A very good family movie
Aug 13, 2015
In recent years, we are getting to see less and less boxing movies. They're very popular in the 1930's and now we haven't see much of the sport. Only the Rock movies (There be another Rocky movie out in the fall) and 1980's "Raging Bull" has kept the boxing movie going. "Southpaw" tries to hard to be dramatic and ends up as a empty movie about boxing. Jake Gyllenhaal tries to hard to trying to sell his character on the big screen. He plays a sucessful boxer name Billy Hope who won every championship match. One day a eye injury sidelines him and is told by his wife thsat he must retire. But then a accidential shooting lead to the death of his wife and child custody battles and a comeback has sink this movie to a level of a soap opera. There is Oscar buss and if you asked me it's not Jake Gyllenhaal. That buss comes from Oona Lawrence who play his daughter Leila Hope. Not only she deserves an Oscar nomination, but she's the only person that I care about in the movie.
