The first 2/3 felt a lot like The Patriot (2000), but the American Civil War instead of the American Revolutionary War, and substituting Mel Gibson for Matthew McConaughey. Then the movie took a different turn in theme, which I didn't necessarily dislike. More than anything, there were bits and pieces that just felt out of place. Still, an entertaining and tension-filled historical dramatization, with McConaughey giving a great leading performance and Knight Newt. This film is most definitely rated R for a reason. One of the first scenes in the movie is a brutal yet truthful representation of a Civil War hospital, full of amputations and blood. The movie has some disturbing, yet sadly historically accurate imagery of treatment of African Americans before, during, and after the Civil War period in the South. Giving the current political climate, the film comes off at certain times as preachy, almost like a history channel documentary, driving by performances. Overall while Free State of Jones had some pacing issues, it was still impressive in the ways that it created emotional attachment to characters, and the situations they were in. Still though, it's probably not worth seeing in theaters unless you're a die hard fan of historical dramatization war movies. It is better worth your time and money to wait for the rental.

Matthew McConaughey may be the best reason why I like about "Free State of Jones, But that's all that i like. It's a great history lesson but not much of a movie. McConaughey plays Newt knight, a solider for the confederate army until the death of his nephew led him to return home and form a rebellion against the confederate from the county of Mississippi called Jones which lead to the state of Jones. This is a great history lesson on the conflict in Mississippi, but overall, the movie has a feel of a made for TV movie on the History Channel. Matthew McConaughey is credited for keeping the film together. He could get a Oscar nomination for his role. but the movie has very little to admire. Also in the movie is Keri Russell whom I admired in the 2007 movie "Waitress<" is wasted. She needs to appear in more scenes. a better movie about the Civil War is the 1990 movie "Glory," Plus the PBS mini-series "the Civil War." Both are better than this movie. The movie is released by STX whom hasn't made a major impact in the movie market. and "Free State of Jones," is one proof that STX hasn't been trying.
